Fed: Govt won't be intimidated by teacher threats: Rudd

By Jessica Marszalek

BRISBANE, April 12 AAP - The federal government will not be intimidated by teacher
threats to boycott national tests linked to the federal government's My School website,
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says.

The Australian Education Union (AEU) is meeting in Melbourne on Monday and is ready
to ban teachers from holding next month's National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy
(NAPLAN) tests.

The union has released independent polling, which shows most public school parents
believe the move would be justified.

Mr Rudd said the union was trying to undermine the government's attempts to better
the school system.

"The Australian government is on the side of parents and we're on the side of My School
because we want to lift the standards of all Australian schools," he told reporters in
Brisbane.

"Therefore the government won't be intimidated by any industrial tactics by anybody
because we believe this reform is necessary for the future.

"Mums and dads across the country want to see how their schools are performing and
how we lift the performance of those schools in the future."

He said no one should fear transparency, which was necessary to decide whether special
investments in certain schools needed to be made.

Mr Rudd also called on Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to make clear his position on the issue.

AEU president Angelo Gavrielatos said the union had been trying for months to meet
Education Minister Julia Gillard to put to her a plan that would protect students from
being stigmatised by "league table" results.

"The choice for the AEU federal executive will be whether to sit back and allow schools
and students to be inappropriately labelled as failures in league tables or to take action
to protect students," he said.

Fed:Back off or risk compromising probe: police

DARWIN, April 20 AAP - Police have warned political leaders and media commentators
to back off, saying interference and speculation could compromise their investigations
into the asylum-seeker disaster.

Angry Northern Territory Police, leading the probe into the fatal boat blast at Ashmore
Reef, on Monday rejected any suggestion of a cover up.

"Speculation and claims of a cover up are disappointing," Acting Commander Peter Bravos,
who is heading the territory's investigation, told reporters in Darwin on Monday.

The pointed statement came a day after federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull said
the government could face accusations of a cover up unless it gave details of how the
boat blew up, causing the deaths of five asylum seekers and injuring dozens more.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett has also come under fire for saying in the hours
after Thursday's explosion that he'd been informed asylum seekers on the boat spread petrol
which then ignited "causing the explosion".

Mr Bravos made clear he would not tolerate any further attempts to politicise their
investigation.

"Five people have lost their lives and we will not be responding to or be influenced
by rumour," he said.

"Speculation has the ability to compromise the investigation.

"A public inquest will be held where all information will be canvassed."

In a later statement, he added: "This is a police matter, and recognition of such by
government and government agencies is appreciated".

The government has said only that the explosion was fuel-related and that it would
not speculate on the cause, which was up to investigators to determine.

Mr Bravos said Northern Territory Police were yet to begin interviewing the survivors
- 42 asylum seekers believed to be from Afghanistan, and two Indonesian crew.

Dozens of the survivors remain in hospital in Darwin, Perth and Brisbane. They include
several who remain in critical condition with horrific burns.

Others who received minor burns are due for release from hospital, into the custody
of immigration officials, as early as Tuesday.

Mr Bravos said an investigative team at Ashmore Reef had started interviews with Customs
and Border Protection personnel and had seized debris following Thursday's explosion.

They are expected back in Darwin with the debris and statements later this week.

Burns specialist Fiona Wood and Mark Duncan-Smith, who've been treating some of the
injured at Royal Perth Hospital, said some were doing well and were up and about.

But others remained very ill. On Monday, two patients in the intensive care unit were
still listed as critical but stable condition.

Professor Wood said it had not yet been established where the patients would undergo
rehabilitation, and Customs officials had not yet spoken to the 22 Afghans and one Indonesian
treated in Perth.

In Darwin, three survivors are doing well enough that they may be released to immigration
officials on Tuesday, Royal Darwin Hospital general manager Dr Len Notaras said.

He said the men, aged from their late teens to mid 40s, had been through a lot over
the past few days.

"Seeing the individuals arrive the first day in the early hours of Friday morning,
all they had was the tattered singed clothing they were wearing, and a look of tragedy
of whatever had occurred," Dr Notaras told reporters.

"It was one of those moving moments that brings a lump of sadness into your throat.

They will have very little apart from some scars to remember this."

The hospital's head of surgery David Read said the nine survivors under his care had
a good outlook for recovery.

Meanwhile, four asylum seekers in critical condition in Brisbane face more surgery this week.

Doctors at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital say there has been no change in
the condition of any of the seven people they are treating.

Four with very serious burns remain critical in intensive care, having developed blood
infections. The others are stable.

Burns surgeon Michael Muller said the asylum seekers' poor physical conditions increased
the risk of infection when they were injured.

FED: Aussie's take a punt on the games

Australian punters look set to break an Olympic record of their own .. with betting
agencies reporting larger than anticipated interest in the Games.

TAB Sportsbet had anticipated holding about 13.5 million dollars over the 16 days of
competition in Beijing .. but only two days into the event it now seems likely to surpass
that mark.

Australian's punted about 80 thousand dollars on today's men's 400m freestyle final
in the swimming .. in which GRANT HACKETT took sixth place behind young South Korean star
PARK TAE HWAN.

About 400 thousand dollars has already been laid on the men's football competition
which is still in the group stages.

Lasseters Sportsbook says interest in the days leading up to the Olympics had been
slow but since the opening ceremony on Friday night there's been an increase in betting.

Lasseters spokesman GERARD DAFFY says as the Australians begin winning more and more
gold medals the interest will only increase.

Fed: Statement from Andrew Johns' management

SYDNEY, Aug 30 AAP - The following is the statement issued today by Andrew Johns' management
The Fordham Company after the former rugby league Test captain was cautioned in London
for possession of an ecstasy tablet:

Andrew Johns has confirmed he was issued with a caution for possession of an ecstasy
tablet in London last Sunday.

Johns was not charged with any offence by British Transport Police who apparently were
conducting a routine search at underground railway stations following the annual Notting
Hill Carnival.

Following an interview with police he was told the misdemeanour did not warrant being
charged and instead was given an official caution.

Johns said today he recalled an unknown person pushing a tablet into his jeans at a
crowded entertainment venue last Sunday - his last day in the United Kingdom following
a six weeks overseas holiday.

"I was having such a good time, seeing it was the last day before I flew home," he said.

"I stupidly forget about the tablet and instead of getting rid of it I left myself
in a situation I soon deeply regretted," he said.

"I have been a very foolish person and realise I have brought great disappointment
to my family, friends and many people, including lots of youngsters who have looked up
to me over the years. It has left a black mark on my reputation which I will work very
hard at erasing".

Fed: Moderate views may have kept retiring MP off front bench

Moderate Liberal MP BRUCE BAIRD .. who'll retire from politics at this year's federal
election .. says he's disappointed never to have served as a HOWARD government minister.

Mr BAIRD .. who's spent a combined 20 years in federal and state parliament .. won't
recontest his safe seat of Cook in Sydney's south.

He's told ABC radio he'd questioned the PM about a possible promotion .. and was told
he's regarded as very talented.

But he says his outspoken views on controversial issues like asylum seeker policy may
have affected his chance of promotion.

Mr BAIRD and his fellow moderates have been criticised by their colleagues after splitting
from the government over changes to asylum seeker laws.

Liberal MP DON RANDALL last year branded the group anarchists trying to undermine the
prime minister .. after they forced the delay of a controversial bill allowing all boat
arrivals to be processed offshore.

The bill was later scrapped after Coalition senators threatened to cross the floor to oppose it.

In 2005 the moderate backbenchers won a change to asylum seeker laws removing women
and children from detention centres.

Former Tourism Australia boss SCOTT MORRISON .. who's also a former New South Wales
state director of the Liberal Party .. is the early frontrunner for Mr BAIRD's Sydney
seat.

Fed: US wheat sales to Iraq soar as AWB ban continues

By Robin Pash

CANBERRA, Aug 7 AAP - The United States has "reclaimed" the Iraq wheat market, securing
three quarters of the country's imports while Australia's grain trade with Baghdad flounders.

Embattled monopoly wheat exporter AWB remains locked out of the lucrative market, with
Iraq maintaining its trading ban on AWB while the company faces an inquiry into the kickbacks
it paid to the former regime of Saddam Hussein.

Iraq has consistently been one of Australia's biggest markets since AWB first began
shipments to the country in the 1950s, but exports have fallen dramatically since the
UN's oil-for-food program ended with the 2003 invasion by US-led forces.

US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns, who has just completed a visit to Baghdad, says
America has won 72 per cent of the country's market share for wheat over the last year.

Figures from his department show American exporters shipped 2.3 million tonnes of wheat
to the country in 2005-06.

"So Iraq is now the third largest purchaser of US wheat," Mr Johanns said.

"Every indication is that there's satisfaction with that, that they're pleased with
the purchases from the United States."

The US did not supply wheat under the corruption-ridden United Nations oil-for-food
program for Iraq that ran between December 1996 and March 2003.

AWB shipped 12 million tonnes of grain to Iraq and was the program's biggest supplier
of food, agreeing to the corrupt government's demands for $290 million in illicit payments
in the process.

US wheat sales to Iraq resumed in 2003-04 with shipments of 247,000 tonnes, increasing
to 490,000 tonnes in 2004-05, then a huge leap to 2.33 million tonnes last financial year.

AWB shipped 715,000 tonnes of wheat to Iraq in 2005-06.

Mr Johanns said he was confident of strong, ongoing sales to the country.

"It's a market that we have successfully reclaimed in the last year, and I'm optimistic
about additional sales in the future."

Iraq usually imports about three million tonnes of wheat a year, with Australian product
accounting for up to two thirds of that figure.

Baghdad suspended trade with AWB - although not with Australia - in February as details
of AWB's illicit payments to Saddam's government emerged at the Cole inquiry into the
affair.

AWB then reluctantly gave up its legislated right to veto bulk exports by other companies
to allow Australia's only grain sale to Iraq for 2006 to go ahead.

Wheat Australia, a consortium made up of grain handlers CBH, GrainCorp and ABB, began
shipping the 350,000 tonnes of wheat to the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr last month.

But the group could find it tough to make another sale when Iraq announces its next
tender, with AWB unlikely to relax its veto again.

Australia's wheat exports to Iraq over the last decade have been a mixed bag, but have
generally exceeded one million tonnes.

AWB said it always expected to face increased competition from the US once the oil-for-food
program ended.

"We expected (Iraq) to be a fully contestible, commercial market going forward," spokesman
Peter McBride said.

A spokesman for Trade Minister Mark Vaile said the US export figures were not surprising
given Iraq's trading ban on AWB.

Labor accused the government of adding to the problem by mishandling the AWB scandal.

Bessemer, Sir Henry

Bessemer, Sir Henry (1813–1898) British inventor and engineer Bessemer was the son of a mechanical engineer who had fled from the French Revolution. After leaving the village school in Charlton, where he was born, he worked as a type-caster, until the family moved to London in 1830. At the age of 17 he set up his own business to produce metal alloys and bronze powder. In 1843 he had an idea that made his fortune. On purchasing some ‘gold’ paint (made of brass) for his sister he was horrified at its high price. He designed an automatic plant to manufacture the paint and made sufficient money to pursue a career as a professional inventor.

During the Crimean War (1853–56) Bessemer invented a new type of gun with a rifled barrel. To manufacture the gun he needed a strong metal that could be run into a mold in a fluid state. At that time cast iron (pig iron) contained carbon and silicon impurities, which made it brittle. Wrought iron, which was relatively pure, was made by a laborious process of refining pig iron. The temperature of the furnace, while sufficient to melt the pig iron, was not sufficient to keep the purer iron molten. The refined metal was extracted in lumps after which it was ‘wrought’. Bessemer proposed burning away the impurities by blowing air through the molten metal. The Bessemer converter that he invented is a cylindrical vessel mounted in such a way that it can be tilted to receive a charge of molten metal from the blast furnace. It is then brought upright for the ‘blow’ to take place. Air is blown in through a series of nozzles at the base and the carbon impurities are oxidized and carried away by the stream of air.

Bessemer announced his discovery in 1856. At first his idea was accepted enthusiastically and within weeks he obtained £27,000 in license fees. However, though the process had worked for him, elsewhere it failed dismally because of excess oxygen trapped in the metal, and because of the presence of phosphorus in the ores. (By chance Bessemer's ore had been phosphorus-free.) His invention was dropped and Bessemer found himself the subject of much ridicule and criticism. Bessemer established his own steelworks in Sheffield (1859) using imported phosphorus-free iron ore.

Robert Mushet (about 1856) solved the problem of the excess oxygen by the addition of an alloy of iron, manganese, and carbon to the melt. Bessemer's process then worked provided nonphosphoric ores were used, but it took much time and determination to convince ironworkers after the initial failure. The invention eventually reduced the price of steel to a fifth of its former cost, made it possible to produce it in large quantities, and made possible its use in a variety of new products. The problem of dealing with the phosphorus impurities was solved in 1878 by Sydney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy Carlyle Gilchrist. Bessemer retired a rich man in 1873.
